Dubai has become one of the most exciting cities in the world for fashion and editorial work. Within an hour you can go from the sleek concrete of Dubai Design District to golden dunes, heritage lanes and turquoise coastline. As an editorial photographer in Dubai, I help designers, brands and models turn those backdrops into images that tell a story and sell a collection.

I'm Zahra. I trained in architecture before photography, and that still shapes how I see a frame: line, light, proportion and texture. Here's how I approach fashion and editorial shoots, and how to plan one that works for your brand.

Fashion vs Editorial Photography: What's the Difference?

Fashion and lookbook images

Fashion and lookbook photography shows the clothes clearly: fit, fabric, colour and detail. It's what customers need on e-commerce pages and line sheets, and consistency across every look matters.

Editorial images

Editorial photography adds a narrative. It's about mood, character and concept: a story told across a series of frames. Editorial images build a brand's world and are what people share, save and remember.

Most of my clients want a mix: clean product-focused frames plus a handful of storytelling images for campaigns and social media.

How I Plan an Editorial Shoot

1. Concept and mood board

Every shoot starts with a conversation about your collection, your customer and where the images will live. We build a mood board together covering colour palette, posing energy, light (soft and airy or bold and contrasty) and reference images.

2. Creative direction and team

I can help coordinate the people behind a strong editorial: hair and makeup, styling and model selection. You can bring your own team, or I'll help you plan who's needed so the day runs smoothly.

3. Location scouting

Location is half the story in Dubai:

  • Dubai Design District and Downtown / Business Bay for modern, architectural lines.
  • The desert for ethereal, minimalist imagery with soft golden light.
  • Al Fahidi and the old souks for texture, colour and cultural depth.
  • JBR and Palm Jumeirah beaches for a luxurious coastal feel.

Some locations need permits or have restrictions, so we plan these early. For outdoor ideas, see my favourite outdoor photoshoot locations in Dubai.

4. Shot list and timing

We plan looks, changes and light. Dubai's harsh midday sun is rarely flattering, so outdoor editorials usually run early morning or late afternoon. Indoor and studio work gives more flexibility.

5. On the day

I direct with energy but keep things relaxed. Models and clients do their best work when they feel comfortable. I check focus, garment detail and styling as we go, so nothing needs fixing in post.

Getting Images That Work Everywhere

Before the shoot, think about every place the images will appear: website banners (wide), Instagram and Reels covers (vertical), lookbook spreads and press. I compose with these crops in mind and leave breathing room around garments, so your designer isn't forced into awkward cuts later. A little planning here means one shoot can feed your launch, your e-commerce pages and months of social content.

Who I Work With

  • Emerging and established designers launching a collection or lookbook.
  • Abaya, modest-fashion and occasionwear labels that need elegant, refined imagery.
  • Boutiques and e-commerce brands that want consistent product images plus campaign content.
  • Models and creatives building a portfolio with strong editorial frames.

If your shoot is really about you as a founder rather than the garments, a personal branding photography session might suit you better.
