A little preparation is the difference between a family photoshoot that feels stressful and one that feels like a fun morning out that happens to produce beautiful photographs. As a family photographer in Dubai, I've guided hundreds of families through this process — and the same handful of things make the biggest difference every single time. This guide covers everything: timing, outfits, preparing the kids, what to bring, and the small details most families only learn after their first shoot.
Choose the Right Time of Day
In Dubai, light is everything. Golden hour — the 60 minutes after sunrise or before sunset — gives you soft, warm, flattering light and comfortable temperatures for the kids. Midday sun, by contrast, creates harsh shadows under the eyes and makes everyone squint, no matter how good the location is.
Between October and April, a late-afternoon slot around 4:30–5:30 pm is ideal: the light is beautiful, the kids are past nap time, and the temperature is pleasant. In the summer months, early morning sessions starting around 6:00–6:30 am are the outdoor option — or we move the session indoors entirely. When you book, I'll confirm the exact golden hour timing for your specific date and location, because sunset shifts by nearly two hours across the Dubai calendar.
One thing many families don't consider: golden hour is short. Arriving 15 minutes late doesn't mean losing 15 minutes — it can mean losing the best light of the entire session. Plan to arrive 10 minutes early, parked and ready.
Plan Your Outfits Early (Not the Night Before)
The golden rule: coordinate, don't match. Identical white shirts and jeans looked great in 2005; today the most beautiful family photos come from choosing two or three complementary colours and letting each family member dress within that palette, in their own style.
- Soft neutrals — cream, beige, white, dusty blue, sage green — photograph beautifully in Dubai's natural light and never date.
- Avoid neon colours, large logos, and busy patterns; they pull attention away from faces and reflect colour casts onto skin.
- Flowing dresses for mum add movement and elegance, especially with a beach or desert breeze. Linen shirts for dad photograph especially well outdoors.
- Match the palette to your location: earthy tones for the desert, lighter tones for the beach, richer tones against Al Seef's heritage stone.
- Try everything on 3–4 days before the shoot — including the kids' outfits and shoes. This is exactly when you discover the trousers no longer fit or the dress needs ironing, while there's still time to fix it.

3. Prepare the Kids (This Is the Real Secret)
Ask any family photographer: the single biggest factor in a session's success is not the location, the outfits, or the camera. It's whether the children are fed, rested, and relaxed.
- Schedule the shoot around nap time, not through it. A 4:30 pm session works because most little ones have napped; a session that starts when nap should have started rarely ends well.
- Feed everyone before the session, and bring non-messy snacks for during it — think crackers or pouches, not chocolate near white outfits.
- Frame the day as a fun outing, not a photoshoot. Telling young kids they must "behave and smile" creates the exact stiffness we're trying to avoid. Tell them we're going to play at the beach — because honestly, we are.
- Bring a favourite small toy or comfort item. It calms nerves, and it often sneaks into the most treasured shots.
- Don't panic about tantrums. They happen, they pass, and I build buffer time into every session. Some of the most beautiful images come right after a meltdown, in the comforting.
My style is candid and play-based, so kids never need to pose or sit still. I photograph them being themselves — chasing, laughing, whispering secrets — and the best moments usually happen in the last 20 minutes, once everyone has completely forgotten the camera.
What to Bring on the Day
Keep one bag by the door the night before:
- Water for everyone — always, in Dubai, in every season
- Snacks and baby wipes
- A hairbrush, hair ties, and lip balm for quick touch-ups
- A spare outfit for each child in case of spills or sandy accidents
- Comfortable walking shoes — you can change into "photo shoes" at each spot
- A light jacket in winter months; desert evenings cool down fast after sunset
Leave at home: sunglasses (they'll end up on someone's face in half the shots), smartwatches with bright screens, and hair accessories that don't match the outfit plan.
Decide on Your Location in Advance
Dubai offers everything from beaches and desert dunes to heritage lanes and skyline backdrops — and the right choice depends on your family's personality and your children's ages. Toddlers do best where they can roam safely; teenagers often prefer the cooler, editorial feel of the Marina or desert. It sounds premature, but it shapes the session. If you want a large horizontal print above the sofa, I'll compose wide frames with space around the family. If the priority is grandparents' gifts, we'll make sure to capture each grandchild individually. If it's holiday cards, we'll get a clean full-family frame early while everyone is fresh. Relax — Direction Is My Job
The most common thing parents say before a session: "We're awkward in front of the camera." The most common thing they say after: "That was actually fun." You don't need to know how to pose — nobody does. During the session I guide you through natural interactions: walking hand in hand, playing with the kids, the classic throw-them-in-the-air, quiet cuddles at the end. I photograph the real moments in between the prompts. Your only job is to show up, be present, and enjoy an hour together as a family.
